Nick Somers has announced his candidacy for Santa Clarita City Council, District 4, launching a grassroots campaign centered on community service, responsible growth, fiscal accountability and bringing a fresh perspective to City Hall.

Somers, a longtime Santa Clarita resident, small business owner and veteran of the film industry, has spent much of his life serving others as an EMT, first responder and community volunteer.

He currently serves with the Santa Clarita Valley Search & Rescue Team and has also volunteered with the LAPD Search & Rescue Team, assisting with searches for missing children, vulnerable adults and others in need.

Earlier in his life, Somers served as an EMT with a fire department, volunteered with law enforcement and the American Red Cross, and spent four years with the Los Angeles Mayor’s Crisis Response Team, assisting individuals and families following traumatic incidents.

“I’m not running because I’ve spent my life in politics. I’m running because I’ve spent my life serving people,” Somers said. “Whether it’s been as an EMT, on a search and rescue team, running a small business or raising a family here in Santa Clarita, I’ve learned that leadership starts with showing up, listening and doing the work. That’s the approach I want to bring to City Hall.”

Somers and his wife have lived in Santa Clarita for more than 14 years and are raising their two children in the community.

A cancer survivor since the age of 21, Somers says that experience helped shape a lifelong commitment to service and a belief that success should be measured in part by the positive impact a person has on others.

A Campaign Focused on Local Priorities

Somers’ campaign will focus on several priorities affecting Santa Clarita residents, including:

• Smart, Responsible Growth: Ensuring development decisions consider their full impact on existing neighborhoods, traffic, businesses and residents, while holding developers accountable for mitigating those impacts.
• Infrastructure That Keeps Pace: Making sure roads, utilities, public safety resources, schools, healthcare capacity and other critical infrastructure are considered alongside continued population and housing growth.
• Supporting Working Families and the Local Economy: Looking for practical ways local government can reduce unnecessary costs and barriers, expand housing options, support small businesses and strengthen Santa Clarita’s economy.
• Public Safety: Advocating for the staffing, equipment and resources needed by the law enforcement officers, firefighters and first responders who protect Santa Clarita.
• Fiscal Responsibility: Treating taxpayer dollars with the same care residents and small business owners must exercise with their own budgets and prioritizing essential services and community needs.
• Investing in District 4: Advocating for greater investment in District 4, including the development of a community center offering recreation, youth and senior programming, meeting space and other services for local residents.

Somers also says transparency and accessibility will be central to how he approaches the job if elected.

“Residents aren’t always going to agree with every decision a councilmember makes, and that’s part of representative government,” Somers said. “But they deserve to know why those decisions were made. I want residents to know where I stand, have an opportunity to be heard and understand the reasoning behind my votes.”

A Different Kind of Campaign

Somers is also taking an unconventional approach to campaigning, emphasizing direct conversations with residents rather than relying heavily on traditional political advertising.

Instead of measuring the strength of the campaign solely by dollars raised, Somers is asking supporters to contribute something he considers more valuable: their time.

“I would rather earn someone’s vote through a genuine conversation than spend money trying to buy their attention,” Somers said. “If someone supports this campaign, I’m asking them to talk to their neighbors, share our message, invite me to meet with their neighborhood or community group, and help create conversations about the future of Santa Clarita.”

Somers has also pledged that, if elected, he will donate 20% of his City Council salary each month to local nonprofit organizations, reflecting what he describes as a commitment to lead through service.

“Santa Clarita is already an incredible place to live and raise a family,” Somers said. “I’m not running to reinvent our city. I’m running to protect what makes it special, address the areas where we can do better, and make sure residents have a meaningful voice in the decisions that shape our future.”

Somers will seek election to the Santa Clarita City Council representing District 4.
